Junior player banned 15 games for sucker punch to Ducks prospect

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League handed Charlie Roy of the Shawinigan Cataractes a 15-game suspension for a violent punch to the head of Maxime Comtois, a Ducks forward prospect selected as the team’s top pick in this year’s NHL entry draft. In the contest played on Saturday, Comtois was attempting to fish the puck away from Roy in the offensive zone when the Victoriaville Tigres winger was knocked into the Shawinigan defenseman by a Cataractes teammates as all of them wound up at the boards on the left side of the ice. Comtois lost his helmet when he initially fell and as his back was to the ice, Roy turned around and struck him directly in the head. The ugly incident left Comtois with a concussion after the back of his head hit the ice. In his explanation of the suspension on the QMJHL website, league director of player safety Raymond Bolduc said Roy’s act was “free, violent and devastating.” Bolduc added that, “At no time can the League tolerate this kind of gesture.” The Ducks selected Comtois, 18, with the first of two second-round draft picks in June. Comtois was off to a hot start in his third QMJHL season as he had nine goals and two assists in nine games. Roy, 20, is in his first season with Shawinigan after playing three full years with the Blainsville-Boisbriand Armada.
